Year in Review: 2009

My favorite three films won’t come as a shock to anyone who follows the site or even takes a look over at my list of films viewed from the year, but it was definitely a challenge ranking the other seven. This was a year filled with great blockbuster entertainment and similarly solid smaller films that were all just good. Ask me on a different day and the order of 4-10 might be slightly different.

25 Films I Really Liked from the Aughts

Feel free to take these with a grain of salt – there’s a reason I haven’t called this list the best films of the decade. These are a cross-section of the films that have stayed with me, the films I keep coming back to, and the films I think will be around for years to come.

Who Will and Should Win Oscar, 2009

With Slumdog Millionaire steamrolling most all awards it’s eligible for in the precursor awards, this year’s Oscars will be a bit anticlimactic when Best Picture and Best Director are announced, but there are still some potential spoilers in store for the rest of the major categories.

Year in Review: 2008

It was an incredibly good year for film, where most of the highly-hyped films lived up to the hype, where blockbusters were strong, where even the bad films were bad in an entertaining way, and where once again, an animation studio from Northern California knocked everyone’s hypothetical socks off with their latest offering.

Year in Review: 2007

Part of the reason that I’ve waited a year to put this list out is that 2007 was a particularly weak year for films, full of very good movies, but very few masterpieces. However, there were several gems and at least ten worth seeking out on Netflix if you haven’t already.

Year in Review: 2006

There are scores of lists popping up all over the place telling you what’s good to see in theaters now. A year after the fact, I’m ready to declare my ten favorite films from 2006, now that I’ve had time to catch up and distance myself from the media and awards blitz of a year ago that we now find ourselves in with this year’s films.

Fall Movie Preview 2007

The sheer number of films that look promising this season is the most exciting aspect of this film season. Last year’s preview had 32 films; with 48 films on this preview, there’s a wide offering of potentially good movies this year, from blockbusters to Oscar bait.

Summer Movie Preview 2007

This summer promises to be sequel-heavy, with Shrek the Third, Spider-Man 3, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, and Ocean’s Thirteen among the releases (there’s also another film… something about pirates). So while there may not be a lot of originality this season, that’s not what we come to expect from the summer movies. Here’s hoping that the sequels stay smart and the original films deliver. Of course, they can’t all be successes, but the following 24 films are the ones I’m most hopeful for.

Oscar Wrap-Up 2007

Forget Nyquil, just keep this year’s Oscars on your TiVo and you’ve got yourself something that will surely put yourself to sleep. Ok, ok, ok, so they weren’t that bad. The Oscars were a nice ode to the film industry, but boy, what a snooze-fest of a ceremony on the whole.
